Help, I am confused!
Do I go left or right? Should I keep going or turn back? Should I wait or quit? Should I say “yes” or “no?” We all go through confusion at so many times in our life. We experience confusion about who to marry, which school to go to, what course or career to choose, and other life issues. I assume you are here reading this post because you are confused about an issue. You’ve come to the right place.
Confusion can be created from our own inherent desires against God’s will. Confusion can arise based on our level of maturity. The world, when it goes against godly standards, also presents confusing situations to us. Too much counsel brings confusion.
Sadly, we will all continue to experience confusion in our lives, but you can breathe a sigh of relief: your Heavenly Father never gives confusion. Read 1 Corinthians 14:33. He is also eager to free you from any confusion you face. You need to allow God to lead you in confusing times. Any decision from Him is peaceful; you may not totally understand it, but you will experience peace.
Let’s trash one common state of confusion right now. Don’t be and stay confused about light and darkness. Light is very different from darkness. If your decision is not godly, then don’t do it; go with light! How do you know your desire is not godly? You can identify these symptoms: you lose your peace, it’s not written in His Word, or it is against a godly lifestyle. For example, God said do not be unequally yoked with an unbeliever (2 Corinthians 6:14). Don’t rationalize it; don’t revamp the rule; just obey. Know that every decision we make has consequences that we will have to deal with sooner or later.
When you examine a dark situation with darkness, you get utter darkness.
At this point in the lesson, you may be asking, “How can I deal with confusion?” Here are some tips:
- Don’t be in a rush. Pause and let God in. If you have the luxury of time, use it.When you pause and don’t rush into making a decision, you give room for clarity and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. A good of a sign of a bad decision is when you are being pressured into making the decision. If it’s an urgent decision you have to make in minutes, you can create a pause in your mind then continue with step two – pray.
- Seek light from God. When light shines through the dark, darkness disappears (John 1:5). Confusion can be described as being in darkness. Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you what to do.
- Sometimes God will instruct you to seek counsel from a particular person. At other times, a course of action will be impressed strongly on your heart with a strong sense of peace.
- Don’t keep deliberating your decision; rather, take a bold step of faith and proceed with your intuition. This is one point that affected my decision making. I would decide, then doubt again. It created a lot of confusion for me. Know that there are times your decision will be wrong; trust God to cause it to work out for your good in the end, learn from it, and move on.
There is a place for men’s counsel, but always be sure that you fully understand who is counseling you and from where they acquire their counsel. Be careful not to allow the counsel of men to override God’s leading.
Many people have made wrong decisions in times of confusion and those decisions have ruined their lives, but you can learn how to get out of all confusion with God’s help.
Let me pray with you. God’s Word says in Romans 8:28, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” So, I pray for you that even if you have made any wrong decision, God will cause it to work for your good. And if you are in any state of confusion, receive light and clarity to know what to do in Jesus’s name.
