Is there God?
Many Christians have had to ask this question at one point or the other in their lives: “Does God really exist?” When life’s situations hit us hard or we are faced with seemingly insurmountable mountains, our faith begins to shake, and we doubt God’s existence. In the midst of all these struggles, we ponder whether or not there really is a God in Heaven and why He is allowing us to experience pain on earth.
This is a dangerous place to be, especially if you have tasted and experienced the goodness of God before now.
When we get to this crossroad, taking a step back is essential. Step back and review how you got to this point. Sometimes it is because we have allowed the cares of this world to overpower us, while not giving full attention to God’s Word. It may also mean we have embraced fear over faith. We may have associated with the wrong people who use issues in our life to argue that God does not exist. Other times, it is because we have unanswered requests.
In the midst of a crooked world, I have found that my inner witness, in spite of the outward challenges, is what keeps me going. This is why you need a vibrant relationship with God. Examine this scenario: You love your friend and trust her completely, but the storm came, she misbehaved, and the evidence is glaring that she can no longer be trusted. Now you are faced with the choice to keep your trust for her or not. Think about this deeply: if you maintain the trust regardless, why would you do so despite the evidence? If you lost your trust for her, why would you do that? If I were to answer, I would hold on to trust based on our prior experiences and relationship, and if I didn’t, it would be because I had doubted her even before this evidence was manifested.
Having said all this, I want to let you know that God is perfect, which means I can always trust Him. He is real and loving. He is a good Father; that is who He is and that will never change. One thing I challenge many to do in times of doubt is to cry to God to reveal Himself to you. Express that you are in great doubt and need Him to show up. I can tell you all about God and who He is, but you have you experience Him yourself. You must have a personal experience; this is what will keep you above doubts and fears no matter comes your way.
I want to encourage you to read the lesson in our new convert discipleship session titled, “A Resolution.” I will say a few things about it here. There must come a time in your life where you are resolute about God. There are many things we do not understand about God and we will never understand these things because He is sovereign. You must come to a decision that no matter what, you will love God all your days and that there is no turning back. You must be resolute that no matter what comes your way; God loves you, cares for you, and knows what’s best. You must come to terms with the fact that there are answers to questions you may never know. I found peace when I stopped asking too many “why” questions. How much do you think we humans can do and achieve for ourselves? Who is the One Who gave us the power to do them?
Some action points to consider:
- Step back from the thought pattern. Freeze those thoughts.
- Stay away from negative friends or those that influence those thoughts.
- Seek counsel from strong Christians.
- Bring to memory previous testimonies of God’s goodness.
- Remind yourself that God loves you no matter what.
- You will be tempted to give up; determine now that giving up is not an option!
- Cry to God to help you.
If you are in this situation, I encourage you to chat with us. We need to get to the root cause of this together. Please know that you are not alone.
