Lesson 1: Am I really saved?

Having given your life to Christ, know that someone is not happy about it, and that person is the devil. Your salvation automatically makes you an enemy to the devil. He will aim to make you doubt your salvation experience as often as you let him. Note that I said, “as often as you let him.” So, this lesson is aimed to prepare you for the battle ahead; to equip you to resist and put the devil in his place. One of the devil’s tactics is to use your sin and weakness, the world system, and anything possible to cause you to doubt or frustrate your salvation.

Many years ago, I experienced the same kinds of attacks from the devil, and I would run out for every altar call to give my life to God over again; but that didn’t help. Instead, God led me to these Scriptures, which helped me: John 1:12, “ But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name,” and Romans 8:15-16, “For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, ‘Abba! Father!’”  What a comfort this fact is! The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God. When you gave your life to Christ, everyone in Heaven threw a party. You were given the power to operate fully as the child of the most important Person in Heaven and on earth (2 Peter 1:3). You were adopted into God’s big family and once you receive God’s Spirit, He continues to work with you by confirming in your heart that it’s real, that you are now God’s child. Therefore, if you have moments of doubts, it’s not a strange experience, and my goal is to prepare you for the battle.

I know a few things that the devil will use to make you doubt your salvation:

  1. He will cause you to think about the magnitude of your sin or your past life (Guilt). Jesus died for your sins and those you are yet to commit. He even promised never to remember them again (Hebrews 8:12). So, when the Scripture says you are forgiven, you are!
  2. He will cause you to question whether or not God really accepted you as His child (Unworthiness). Let me assure you, the joy of salvation you have today has been paid for over 2000 years ago. This means that God had you in mind a very long time ago and now that you have come to Him, He is overjoyed because He has always waited for this moment.
  3. He will cause you to judge your salvation experience by how you feel (Emotions). You need faith to walk with God, not feelings. Human feelings are erratic. Today you may feel good, and tomorrow, the opposite. Focus on the Word of God, not how you feel.

You have the security of the assurance of your salvation (I John 5:11-13) and that you have been completely forgiven and accepted by God. Don’t let the devil tell you a lie. Though God hates sin, He knows you are battling the flesh. So, anytime you commit sin, just go back to God and ask for forgiveness. Ask also for grace to be above sin, but understand that once you’ve given your life to Christ, you are His child always (John 10:27-30)!
