How to defend your faith
Get your swords; put on your vests; it’s time to fight to defend your faith! Well, maybe not exactly with physical weapons. But you must learn to defend your faith. Do you have the right tools? Having and building your faith is one thing; defending it is another. Whatever you don’t defend, you cannot keep. Defense keeps intruders away. Is your faith attack-proof? Things will come your way that will cause you to doubt your faith, but you must stand strong. How? Learn how to defend your faith in the following situations:
- When others try to negatively influence you: I know of a young lady who was an average Christian but got distracted by her schoolteacher, who was twisting the Scripture. God used me to intervene, but her faith was shaken. She started doubting God’s Word. Here’s my principle to avoid this pitfall: if it’s not godly and Bible based, I don’t want to hear it. I move far away. You should do the same. I am aware that we don’t know all; hence, we must be open-minded. But as long as I love the truth, I trust the Holy Spirit to guide me into the truth I need. Giving room for ungodly doctrines and heresies is dangerous. Unlike the popular belief, there’s a thin line between loving God and doubting Him.
Here’s a word of caution: if someone asks you about your faith, pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you, then go ahead and share it, but do not engage in unnecessary arguments. Read 1 Peter 3:15.
People judge what they don’t understand. Until the light of God floods their hearts, the preaching of the cross is like foolishness to them (1 Corinthians 1:18). They won’t understand through human knowledge, so avoid damaging arguments and contentions. We share the Word, but the Holy Spirit does the convicting work. We, of ourselves, cannot change anyone. God does the changing.
- When the enemy tries to deceive you(1 John 2:7): There’s no other time to exercise great caution than now. The devil is out there (1 John 2:18) deceiving many that are careless and not strong. Please understand this and keep it mind always: there’s one language the devil needs to stay away from you, and that’s God’s Word. He will come, but the Word of God in your heart is the weapon that you need to resist him (James 4:7). Learn to meditate on God’s Word. 2 Corinthians 11:13-14 tells us that there are many deceivers out there in the world and the devil disguises himself as an angel of light. We are in an age where individual’s relationship with God is what keeps us from being deceived and swayed. A personal experience will keep you strong in God over what you were told. Cultivate a habit of spending time with God. If five minutes is all you got today, start with that. Then continue and build it. When you do, you will have encounters with God in His presence. These encounters are a defense for the times when your faith is questioned. I have had times where I doubt if God really exists or if my religion is the right one, considering that everyone claims to have the right religion. My divine and personal encounters are what pulled me back in. These are encounters that are beyond human intervention.
- When life comes hard at you:Life is tough, no doubt, and that’s why I am happy for you, because you are God’s child. Being God’s children gives us some privileges. Imagine that you are the President of United States’ daughter; anyone who fights you will have to face the President. That fellow is in trouble, if you will agree with me. It is the same with God. When life comes hard at you, know that you have a mighty God who loves you dearly and will save you. Don’t lose your faith, which is eternal, to a temporary problem. John 16:33 tells us that we will face trials, but we will overcome because Jesus won the battle already. Also read Romans 8:37, which confirms that we are conquerors!
You will face some challenges that will make you think God has abandoned you and will therefore make you doubt your faith; be prepared and stand your ground. Matthew 16:34 says, “Whoever stands firm to the end will be saved.” Stand firm! When you experience God, you have light and it floods your heart. You shouldn’t doubt that light while experiencing a dark situation. Do not doubt in the dark what you were told in the light.
